Colds, sore throats and coughs
Why antibiotics usually do not help, and what does
Most colds, sore throats and coughs are caused by viruses and get better on their own in seven to ten days. Antibiotics do not work on viruses, and taking them when they are not needed harms you and everyone else.
What helps: rest, plenty of fluids, paracetamol for fever and pain, warm drinks with honey for a cough (not for children under one), and staying home while you have a fever.
Come back if the fever lasts more than three days, if breathing is difficult or fast, if you cannot swallow fluids, or if a child is unusually sleepy or not drinking.
